چکیده
Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis stands out as one of the most reliable methods for unveiling multifractal properties, specially when real-world time series are under analysis. However, little is known about how several aspects, like artefacts during data acquisition process, affect its results. In this work we have numerically investigated performance applied to synthetic finite uncorrelated following a power-law distribution in presence additive noise, and periodic randomly-placed outliers. We found that, on hand, spurious multifractality observed result finiteness, while noise leads an underestimation exponents hq q<0 even low levels. On other randomly-located outliers corrupted inverse around q=0. Moreover, corrupts entire spectrum, way proportional their density. As application, properties intervals between successive aircraft landings at three major European airports investigated.

The goal of machine learning is to develop predictors that generalize well to test data. Ideally, this is achieved by training on an almost infinitely large training data set that captures all variations in the data distribution. In practical learning settings, however, we do not have infinite data and our predictors may overfit. Overfitting may be combatted, for example, by adding a regularize...
متن کاملDistributed Power-law Graph Computing Distributed Power-law Graph Computing: Theoretical and Empirical Analysis∗
Typically, a large-scale natural graph follows a skewed power law. In distributed graphstructured computations, the skewness usually makes a bad partitioning, which leads to high communication cost and workload imbalance. Therefore, graph partitioning (GP) is a challenging issue. To tackle this challenge, we introduce degree-based techniques into GP via vertex-cut. Accordingly, we develop a nov...
متن کاملPower Law Gels at Finite Strains
SYNOPSIS Many complex fluids exhibit power-law responses in their relaxation modulus; examples include foods, soft solids, fractal gels and other polydisperse systems. In the present study we investigate the rheological characteristics of such materials beyond the linear regime using a gluten-water gel as a prototypical system. The material functions of gluten dough under finite strains can be ...
متن کاملCharacteristics of power-law distributed AE signals
A simple model of the measurement chain frequently used in Acoustic Emission (AE) experiments furnishes interesting results in the case of power-law distributed AE events; the importance of such systems is remarkable as more and more physical processes are being shown to possess scale invariant statistics. The aim of this study is to characterize the response of a simple harmonic 1D resonator s...
